Tobacco Cessation

Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., yet each day more than 3,200 people under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette. Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation training officer Bob Bates shares the story of his lifelong battle to quit. This is part of BWC’s effort to encourage its employees to quit smoking and take advantage of its Take Charge! Live Well! employee wellness program.

About 70 percent of smokers want to quit. When you use coaching and nicotine replacement therapy, your chances are double what they would be without assistance. Without assistance, only about 5 percent remain tobacco free for 3-12 months.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends some key components for a successful tobacco cessation program. These components include:

  • Provide for at least four counseling sessions.
  • Coverage of FDA approved prescriptions and over-the-counter products.
  • Coverage of two quit attempts per year.
